A Car's Flotsam Says Much About Priorities of Automotive Pack Rats

Never let it be said that county drivers aren't prepared for any emergency. If our cars break down in the middle of nowhere, we need only reach under the seat or into the glove compartment or trunk and pull out those handy flower seeds, baseball cards, short-story outlines, wilted vegetables, losing lottery tickets and peacock feathers. Those are just a few of the odd items Life on Wheels readers confessed to carrying in their cars, in addition to such mundane provisions as flares and flashlights, tire gauges and tie-down ropes. Jennie of Anaheim found the following assortment of items during her auto inventory: 2 bath towels, 4 bed sheets, a pink thermal blanket, a gold bedspread, 1 large hook rug ("uncompleted after 10 years"), 1 stuffed toy cat, 1 insurance card, 1 ice chest (empty), 1 gold plastic heart-shaped Christmas ornament, 3 large brown paper bags, 30 baseball cards, product 1 paper towel, 6 tissues, 1 hair clip, 1 gallon antifreeze, 1 drinking glass, 6 st...

shed 12v solar lighting system

Image
This is my first instructable covering a project I completed earlier this year. I have a shed which I use as a workshop as well as somewhere where I can train on my bicycle (on a 'Turbo Trainer') and as a general storage area. Although it's close to the house, there is no mains power available and having enough of resorting to using a touch every time I went into the shed in the winter evenings, I decided to have a go at installing a low voltage LED lighting system which could be run from a 12v battery that is charged from a solar panel. I Googled and Googled. ... I Googled a lot before I went any further. I had no knowledge of how to put one of these together and so it took a few days before I felt I'd learnt enough to know what I was doing. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the components of a solar charging system, it goes something like this:You can hook a solar panel straight up to a battery and charge it. ... however this all goes very badly when the batte...

Why we love Hong Kong's garish, gaudy neon signs

Image
Imagine Hong Kong without any neon signs -- hard, right? We apparently have more of the gassy glass tubes than anywhere else in the world. Despite their ubiquity, though, neon signs are only lightly regulated, and they have been largely left out of the recent surge of interest in Hong Kong heritage.Maybe that’s because they’re just so common. Neon lights were first invented by the French engineer and chemist George Claude, who exhibited the first neon light at a Paris exhibition in 1910. By the 1920s, Claude had patented his design and was selling neon signs in Los Angeles. From there, they spread around the world, and Hong Kong took a particular liking to the technology. Neon continued to thrive here even after its popularity declined in Europe and North America in the 1970s.ÂToday, Hong Kong’s commercial districts are an explosion of neon light, and even global chains like McDonald’s have blinking neon signs. But the fact that neon is everywhere seems to have led to complac...

Argentine President Mauricio Macri promised a thorough investigation into what he called an "unprecedented" outage, one that raised questions about flaws in South America's grid, which connects many of the region's largest countries. Energy officials said the results of the investigation would be available in 10 to 15 days, and they could not immediately provide details on the economic impact of the outage, which came on a S...

Not Just Robotripping: 5 Risky Things Kids Do

Parents' worries never stop. But sometimes, Mom and Dad need reminders that seemingly innocuous items -- cough syrup bottles, cans of computer keyboard cleaners, even incense made from herbs and spices, can provide clues that their children are toying with danger.Increasingly, curious teens in search of inexpensive highs -- especially good kids who aren't drinking or using illegal drugs -- experiment with things they're sure will fall below their parents' radar screens. Some of the most potent drugs of abuse are stored inside the bathroom cabinet or below the kitchen sink, stashed on a shelf in the garage or basement, or tucked into a desk drawer. Nadine J. Kaslow, chief psychologist at Emory University in Atlanta, warns parents to be on the lookout for changes in their child's functioning, such as a sudden fine drop in grades, sudden loss of friends, sleeping much more -- or much less, losing their appetite, becoming unusually secretive, or lying. She also warns a...
